5 Holiday Safety Concerns
For many, the holiday season is their favorite. With darkness descending earlier, the holiday lights adorning homes add to the festive spirit and transform neighborhoods into winter wonderlands. While there is fun and cheer aplenty, potential risks also increase. Here are 5 things to be aware of this season.
1. Fire-related issues
As much as everyone loves the holiday lights, if circuits get overloaded, fire can ruin everything, especially in older homes with antiquated electrical systems. LED lights are recommended, and it is wise to distribute them amongst a number of different circuits to distribute the load. Candles are also a favorite, but if left unattended, can cause disastrous results. If you have chosen a real Christmas tree, keep it well hydrated lest it turn into a tinderbox. If you are using space heaters to supplement heat, keep them at least 3 feet from anything flammable. Lastly, some choose to use their fireplace to burn wrappings and boxes, not aware that their chimney might not be safe and also violating local Spare the Air policies.
2. Personal safety
Festive lights and decorations do not appear on their own; a ladder is usually involved. Do not stand on chairs – use approved ladders and step stools. For those unaccustomed to ladder safety rules, be careful so as to avoid a visit to the local emergency room. Early morning frost is also hazardous. Make sure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are operating correctly.
3. Potential theft
Nothing ruins a holiday faster than theft. Make sure you receive alerts when packages arrive and move them inside immediately. While piling gifts around the tree increases the holiday mood, the visual display could be an enticement for someone to break in. Our family always put the gifts out early Christmas morning so as to remove temptations.
4. Pet issues
The holidays can be a confusing time for pets. Not only are their surroundings changed with holiday decorations, in some cases an increase in visitors and parties can add opportunity for them to act out or escape.
5. Vacant
If your festivities are out-of-town, protect your home in your absence with security systems and automated lights. Halt mail and parcel deliveries to remove temptation. Have neighbors keep an eye on your home.
This is a wonderful time of year and with proper care and diligence, it can also create memories that will last for years to come.
